Short Film Analysis - Doll Face

This short film called 'Doll Face' is a horror/thriller. In the first scene, the camera angle shows a low angle shot of the couple playing chess; in this scene, the camera moves from the chess board to the couple speaking, whilst still positioned in a low shot angle. Then camera angle then zooms onto the couples faces with a close up, showing their expression and concentration towards the game. As the door bell rings, scary, non-diegetic music occurs over the scene. As soon as the man open's the door, the couple automatically assume, this lady is dressed up for Halloween, which then makes the audience believe that it is a Halloween evening. When the camera shows a close up of 'Doll Face', it gives the film more of a horror/thriller vibe, creating the affect that doll face is going to be the main scary character. Doll Face's make-up is rather pale with dark eyes, this portrays her evilness that is assumed by the audience, however, she changes everyone's perspective at the end of the film.

Monday 14th November 2016 - 17:00pm:
On this day we rehearsed our lines and figured out how were going to be positioned and when were going to say our lines to ensure that the whole script flows. On this day we'll be recording scene 1 and 2 together.

Scene 2 - The rest of the characters notice Myles is gone so they go and find him and find a jack in the box next to his dead body. Rhia goes to the jack in the box and opens it. While the music plays she looks in the reflection of the mirror and sees the clown behind her and he kills Rhia too.

Scene 4 - Vj then gets the idea to go to the house where the party was meant to be held that they were all going to attend. However, he crosses paths with the clown as he was waiting there for Vj. Then its left with a cliff hanger.

Location Ideas

This is a bridge that runs over the river, which also leads to a big park. This location is good because it looks slightly abandoned due to the grass not being cut and the trees hanging over that also look like they haven't been trimmed down. The trees hanging over is perfect because that gives us the opportunity to hang/tie the second balloon up.

This alley way is affective as it has a river flowing on either side. We can add the sound of the river flowing whilst the characters are walking; this will give the audience the intensions of one of them falling in. Also this location has trees which we can use to locate the balloon that gets spotted by Myles.

This location can be used when Helena and Santiago are being chased by the clown. It can also be taken from this angle; we can do an over the shoulder shot from the clown running down the hill, chasing the two characters. This will shows the clowns power over the two of them.

This can be the street that the four character are walking down, on their way to the party. The reason this could be a potential location is because the lighting on this road is low-key at night, which is exactly the lighting we need for that particular scene.

This house looks crooked and somewhat abandoned. This could potentially be the house that Santiago finds open and runs into towards the end of the film. It looks frightening which makes the viewers think that something could happen to Santiago if he goes inside.

Final film idea

Film name: Playtime

Plot:

Four characters that go by the names of Rhia, Myles, Vijender and Helena and Jogesh who is the killer clown. Rhia, Vijender, Myles and Helena are all walking back from a party on one cold, dark October evening. Whilst the friends are walking, Myles begins to joke about seeing weird, scary objects around them (relating to 'the boy who cried wolf'). The four friends carry on walking, ignoring Myles's silly jokes. As they begin to walk through the woods, Myles claims that he see's a red, vibrant balloon that was gliding through the air but the friends don't believe him as he was lying before about 'seeing strange things'. He tries to explain to his friends that he isn't lying this time but they still don't believe him. Therefore, Myles goes to grab the balloon. When Myles come back to his friends, he shows them the balloon and pops it in front of them (this is when the audience will expect something to scare them but it doesn't). The friends think he is being silly but not long after Myles gets lost as he spots another red balloon floating through the air and decideds to pop it again, this time a clown appears behind the balloon, killing Myles rapidly. The friends go back to find Myles when they find him dead on the floor, realising that he wasn't lying when he said he was seeing weird, strange things around. They then find a child's jack in the box and another balloon by it. Rhia goes to wind the jack in the box and sees that it has a mirror, as she looks through the mirror, she sees the reflection of a clown however, when she turns around the clown isn't to be seen but as she turns back around to the jack in the box she sees clowns shoes, looks up and sees a clown. Vijender and Helena see that she is about to be killed but before they try to help it is too late therefore they run to save their lifes. As the are running Helena looks back to think she is safe and stops to catch her breath however, the same clown(jogesh) kills her too. Vijender continued to run and realised the Helena is gone and he is now alone. He comes across the party house that they had come from and runs inside for help. As he walks inside he realises that the party is over and the house was empty. He opens a door inside the house to see the clown (or multiple clowns) standing in front of him with knifes, balloons and jack in the box's with them laughing in his face. The film then comes to an end with Vijender's tragic scream.

Draft 2 - film ideas

The first idea:

Our group first came up with the idea of a paranormal horror genre film. The reason we chose the 'paranormal genre' is because viewers find these types of films scary because they contain a lot of spiritual related ideas. The plot contains our charcters bythe names of Karen(Me), Holly(Helena) Jack(Vijender) and Tom(Jogesh). This film would of been set in a park, the four friends went on a camping trip as part of a school expedition. The time eventually turns to the night and everybody falls asleep. Holly then wakes up and is feeling hot therefore she goes outside of the tent for some fresh air. As she is walking around the park, she hears something rustling in the bushes and realises she is not by herself away from the tent. As she looks through the bushes, she comes across a book that was left open. As she goes to open the book, a evil spirit possesses her. She then returns to the tent acting weird, which alarms Jack, he then tries to warn the others. Karen and Tom are not phased and go back to sleep. As Jack tries to help Holly, she ends up killing him. When Karen and Tom wake up, they realise that the other two have gone missing and decide to split up to find them. Eventually, the both get killed, one by one by Holly who is possessed.

The second idea:

My group then came up with the idea of another paranormal film. We decided that the first idea didn't work because of the tent idea, we felt that it didn't sound very scary and portray a typical horror film convention. The characters names are: Susie(me), Jane(Helena), Sam(Jogesh) and Mike(Vijender). The plot consists of the four friends walking back from after watching a film. Sam and Mike continue to walk on leaving Susie behind, she gets left as she sees a strange, old lady who is banging on the window of a crooked, old house. Susies screams alerting the boys; they both come running back and tell Susie to quickly walk away with them. The old lady then shouts out 'I will haunt you all'. All three friends talked about her as they where walking home and all stated that they saw a large, shiny earing that she was wearing but she was only wearing one. Later on as the friends where walking, they came across the exact same earing and pick it up from the floor. What the friends don't know is that this earing is possessed by the women that said would haunt them. Eventually, each friend is killed on their way home by unforeseen circumstances.

The third and FINAL idea:

This idea was generated by an issue/trend that is currently taking place in America and the UK today. All over America, October 2016, people have been dressing as clowns, going out lurking for vulnerable people and harming them which has also led to a number of murders. This 'trend' was then followed into the UK as people started to copy. This then gave our group the idea of a clown related film. Rhia, Vijender, Helena, Jogesh and Myles will all be our individual character within the film. One evening Rhia, Vijender, Helena and Myles attend their friends party. The decide to leave the party early and go walking around. After a few moments, the group come across a vibrant, red balloon that is gliding through the air. Myles is joking around and harmlessly pops the balloon. Suddenly, a 'killer clown'(Jogesh) jumps out of know where. The clown(Jogesh) kills Myles first as the rest run for their lives. Slowly, the clown hunts down each person and kills them one by one.

Research

Age:
From researching and gathering information, i have come to the conclusion that the usual age group for people watching horror films is aged between 16 and 25. Being aged 17 and apart of that age group, i know that majority of the people watching horror films watch them simply because they love the adrenaline rush, some people just like extreme emotions that they haven't yet experienced and some people simply like watching new, exciting films that they have not seen or before.

Gender:
It seems to be that males are more likely to watch horror films than females; this is a stereotypical aspect but also can be true, relating to the number of people I asked during my lunch period at school. Violence tends to be in horror films quite often; stereotypes are that males are more into violence than females. Because horror films contain a lot of violence that includes blood and gore, this will act more upon the males as they will be more interested.

Groups:
In terms of groups; it tends to be friends that go together to the cinema to watch a horror movie, however couples and siblings tend to go too. Couples go when they are on a date, this is because one likes to receive comfort off the other one if they are not confident with watching horror films.

Target Audience

Questionnaire:

This is the questionnaire that I created by hand in order for different people to fill it out. This will help me determine my target audience, it will also be evident throughout my journey on my blog to show my feedback and process of my work.

Audience feedback:

This is a screenshot of a conversation off WhatsApp that was held with my cousin. The messages that you see is hum responding to the first picture that is of my questionnaire. This gives my an insight of what a male from the of 16-20 like to see in a horror film.

Audience Feedback 2:

This is another screenshot of a WhatsApp conversation in regards to responding to my questionnaire. This time I chose my cousin that is a Female. She was more stereotypical and said that she would expect to see a little girl, simply because she believes without one, the film wouldn't be as interesting.

Insidious film analysis - horror project

From the moment that Dalton, the young boy enters the attic, things begin to change for the worse. The attic has a very dark, dusty look to it which automatically makes it look haunted and creepy. As Dalton walks around their new family house, he hears a noise appear from the attic, that grabs his attention straight away and goes to 'investigate', just as a typical young boy would. As he enters the attic, he steps onto a step ladder to turn on the light switch, as he goes to pull the cord, he falls off the ladder as the steps breaks. The following scene after that is shown on the picture above; it is a over the shoulder, long-shot of Dalton's parents watching him through a hospital window. Dalton is lying on a hospital bed with a oxygen mask around his face, automatically making the audience believe that something is more than wrong than a bang on his head. Over this shot, there is dialog from Dalton's mum talking to his dad saying, "He's not in a coma, they don't know what to call it!." This makes the audience feel uneasy and begin to get comfy in the chairs as the story goes on.

This scene is shown once the family are back home after the incident with Dalton, he is currently still in what they must call a 'coma'. As Dalton arrives back home, they build a mini hospital in his bedroom so that the doctors are able to come regularly and check up on him. But nothing is the same again... strange things begin to occur around the house. This scene shows a medium shot of Dalton's mum walking into a room to stop a wooden rocking horse that happen to start rocking by itself; at the same time the pace of the film begins to get faster, creating the affect that something is going to happen. The background of this scene is rather dark, creating a lighter effect around the mum's hand around the rocking horse, stopping it from moving. This creates attention to be drawn towards that only in the room. Suddenly, the baby begins to cry in the other room as something smashes on the floor; this shows that as the mum stopped the horse, the so called 'devil' is creating awareness else where to get attention away from Dalton, making the audience wonder why all of this is happening.

Negative Review for Insidious - horror project

Although the film Insidious has very good parts of the film, there are also some negative factors throughout the film. In terms of negative factors, the film can be very predictable at times which doesn't show much unique style and therefore lacks originality. Originality is key in horror films, as the viewers want to watch something they haven't seen before and something that will surprise them. When the house is shown, you can automatically tell that it is haunted in some sort of way but nothing gives it away too serious until the little boy falls and hurts his head, which sadly leads to him in a coma. The films shows that as the boy gets progressively bad with his coma, the haunting around the house become worse and the family suffer even more each day. Following on from this, the film uses typical horror affects such as doors slamming, screaming, items around the house falling and breaking mysteriously, these sort of scenes make the audience believe that it is a typical horror film, that will have the same plot as any other. This is why it is important to have unique, original ideas from the very start of the production.

Positive Review Analysis - horror project

The director for Insidious chapter 1 is James Wan, who also directed a successful horror film called 'Saw'. The producer of this film goes by the name of Oren Peli, who is also the creator of the Paranormal Activity films. Essentially, this film is based on a haunted house and is one of the most terrifying films made. I would not recommend this film for children under 13, hence the film is rated PG 13; the film is based on a young boy that gets separated from his family by a devil, watching this makes you feel anxious and also feel sympathy for the young boy when he gets taken away. Insidious chapter 1, is a very unsettling film that makes you want to crawl up into a ball and hide. During the end of the film, it left the viewers shocked and scarred, thinking that anywhere they look could be the face of a evil demand, that could get trapped inside of their body.

Insidious Trailer Analysis 2 - horror project

Mise en scene:
The film is mainly set in a big, family home that seems to be located in America, this is from looking at the style and size of the house; also matching the accents of the characters. The house also gives the film a realistic setting. In contrast, the dark, unpredicted scenes, along with the shadows in the background give the film a very unrealistic setting, which may give the audience a hint of what the film is about. The props within the film show very stereotypical items that are placed around the house, such as mirrors and weird looking costumes; this creates a uneasy atmosphere when the audience are watching the film. The tension begins to grow as the title appears on the screen, the past begins to get faster as the title shows pieces missing from the letters; this could suggest that there is missing information from the film.

Sound:
The usual stereotyped sounds occur during the film, such as, screaming, banging doors and fast, heavy running. The doors slamming could indicate that the spirits are moving around the house, creating attention for the family to get distracted, allowing them to get into the little boy's body. The non-diegetic sound builds tension within the house, this keeps the audience's attention on the screen, wondering what will happen next.

Editing:
Cutaway's from the characters are shown quite often throughout the film, creating a mysterious affect, getting the audience wondering what is happening behind the scenes. Fast paced running and screams relate to the spirits, which is very eye catching and ear opening for the audience to watch. During the film, there is a match cut scene that matches when the lights suddenly turn off. All of these sounds portray unrealistic, scary movements that the audience are excited to watch.

Insidious Trailer Analysis - horror project

I have decided to look at the Insidious trailer for my horror project. I will be looking at various different clips from the trailer and analysing the camera shots, sizes and angles, the sound, lighting and also the mise en scene.

The trailer begins with a regular message that is shown at the start of every movie, this is to clarify what they are about to watch may disturb them. The message says 'The following preview has been approved for appropriate audiences by the motion picture associated of America, inc.' and then states the rate of the film; which gives the audience the chance to decide whether they want to watch the film or not. The writing is written in white writing against a vibrant green colour, this is so that it is made clear for everyone to understand and read. There is also no sound in the background, this is for the audience and so they have no distractions whilst reading.

The next clip that I have decided to show is crucial to the audience as it states the title of the film. As the title is shown the letters of the name are slowly rearranging in order to form the correct word. As this is happening, there is crackling, non-diegetic sound over the top to create a mysterious affect of the film. When the title is shown, there is a black background with dashes of red that appear here and there. The colour of the title is white, which again stands out over the bold background. The colours white and black together suggest that evil and good have been put together during this film.

The next clip I have chosen, is a extreme long shot of the house that the family are living in. As the camera pan's across the house, the non-diegetic sound matches with the speed of the film, it begins to slow down which adds a mysterious affect. This clip cuts from the medium shot of a man sitting in a single arm chair. The sound that is added in the background creates tension and makes the audience feel uneasy; wondering what will happen next...

Insidious Poster Analysis - horror project

The center image is a medium shot of a young boy, who looks disturbed and upset. He is standing in front of a dull looking house, as if he is trying to block the way to enter it. The shadow that runs over the boy, looks as if something abnormal is controlling him, as you can see on his face that shows negative emotions. He is wearing red and black pyjama’s indicating that the house behind him is the one he lives in. The colour red is a powerful colour, it can link with anger, danger, violence and something or someone that is possessive, giving the audience the impression that the film has a deep plot. The colour black is also a powerful colour which shows the connotations of evil, sinister and death; linking back to the film and suggesting that an evil character is out to kill someone.
The title of this film contrasts with the young boy’s pyjamas, making it clear the he is the main character. The different contrasts and images within the poster, generates attention to the audience as a way of pulling them into the film, to find out what happens. The boy’s left eye looks a different shape to his right eye, if the audience looks closely, they will see that the word ‘insidious’ is written in his left eye. This could suggest that something evil and strange is inside of him, linking back to him being outside by himself on which looks like a late night.

The background of this pictures shows a rather big house that is shown from a low angle. The house looks extremely dull, with dark, gloomy clouds shadowing over it, showing that the weather isn’t so nice. The sentence that is underneath the title says ‘it’s not the house that’s haunted’. This automatically makes the audience assume that it’s the little boy on the front of the poster that is haunted. The strap line is important as it draws the audience into the film and gets their mind’s thinking about what could happen during it.

Conventions of a Horror film

Introduction

My name is Rhiannon Atwal, I am currently in year 13 studying Media Studies, Health and Social Care and Sport. In order to track my progress, I will be uploading posts to my blog that are relevant to my horror project. This year I will be producing a short horror film that will be maximum of 5 minutes long. Following this, I will be creating a poster that will support my film and a double page spread that will include a review.
